狮子是一种猛兽。它的画像随着佛教绘画传入中国，经过历代民间艺人再创造，提炼并加以图案化，变成驯顺可亲的吉祥瑞兽。其造型蓬头大耳，巨目环睛，娇憨可爱，逗人喜欢，是意象化的艺术形象，与自然形态的狮子大不相同。在宫殿、庙堂或大宅门两旁往往摆着一对石狮子，作为守护装饰和辟邪之用，也是权势的象征。俗还以为它是赐子的神兽，凡画狮子必画绣球。绣球是用丝织品仿绣球花制作的圆球，在中国古代是女性向男子抛打的定情信物。因为它既辟邪又赐子，是吉祥喜庆之品，所以它的画像很受欢迎。有的地方还被当做小儿的守护神敬奉。 据《汉书·礼乐志》，汉代民间流行「狮舞」，两人合扮一狮，一人持彩球逗之，上下翻腾跳跃，活泼有趣。「狮子滚绣球」图案，来源于此。舞狮子为民俗喜庆活动，且寓意祛灾祈福。由绣球组成的图案又叫「绣球锦」、「绣球纹」等。

The lion is the king of beasts and a symbol of power and dignities . the animal is held in high esteem in Buddhism which refers it to as a powerful animal advancing bravely. the lion is a saddle animal of Manjusri. It is a divine animal symbolizing sacerdness and auspiciousness. The lion was regarded by the people as their patron saint that could suppress other animals and exorcise evil spirits. A pair of lions can be seen guarding the entrance to large buildings both in ancient and modern China , Most of the lions have curled hair ,large eyes, an opening mouth,and outstretching paws.The are  frightening yet lovable.
